Cafe Collage- truly a hidden gem!

August 6, 2012

I have been wanting to try Cafe Collage in Oregon House since I ran into a friend of mine from pre-natal yoga who was raving about it! Not only had I never heard of it but I had never even been to Oregon House, which is about 45 minutes from Nevada City. It is on Marysville Rd between Hwy 20 and Hwy 49. They are only open for dinner Thursday- Sunday and the drive makes dinning here more of a planned event than an on a whim outing.

We had a good friend in town from San Francisco and we had been in Rough and Ready that afternoon anyway so we decided to continue on to this mysterious destination!

The drive was incredibly scenic and pastoral, upon arrival I was surprised to see that Cafe Collage is REALLY in the middle of nowhere! We pulled up to the cafe which my friend described as a beautiful yellow shed and we went in!

The interior was elegantly decorated in a Mediterranean theme and the service was excellent. We were seated and promptly brought a basket of fresh bread and hummus. We found out that the menu is heavily Greek, which was good news for us, a mixed group of omnivores and vegetarians!

We lingered over a beautiful Greek antipasti platter with fresh dolmas, hummus, babaganoush, fresh pitas and olives! Then onto the main course of moussaka, spanakopita and a pizza which all shinned and filled us fast with the generous portions. We had Felix with us and the service was excellent, making special drinks for him and showing him the kitchen.

We lingered over wine and dessert which was also wonderful and marveled at the fact that we had discovered this amazing place in the middle of the country! It seemed like the perfect place to have a special birthday or anniversary dinner or to come to have a special evening as a couple. I loved the drive from Hwy 20 and to get home we stayed on Marysville road towards Hwy 49……all of it, the food, the service and the location made for a spectacular evening that I highly suggest!!
